Council delays vote until Saturday

The council decided on Friday to delay the vote on the transfer of operations to the Zoological Society to Saturday evening. The response from Detroit Deputy Mayor Anthony Adams was ominous "We will simply not continue to fund the operations of the zoo, given our financial situation," he said. Remember why we're not hearing from the actual mayor on this isssue. He's in Africa.

The city can't continue to pay for the zoo.
The Zoological Society wants to take over the day to day operation with the assistance of $4 million from the state.
The status of the union members on the zoo's staff has to be maintained.
There are questions about the efficiency of the Zoological Society as a charity organization.

I''m starting this blog as a resource for people interested in saving the Detroit Zoo. Currently I don't have a good overview of the issues involved other then the ongoing problem with the lack of funds in the Detroit city budget. I suspect there are other issues involved but will confine my first few posts to linking to all the web information I can find on the issue. Please share any other information you have in the comments and if we work together we can make a differance in the fight to keep the zoo open.
